Custom Channel Data

Modified on Mon, 29 Jan, 2024 at 2:58 PM

Channels can be used to represent anything within your organisation, from a department to users of an application. In some situations, a simple channel name is not enough information to identify the channel or you might simply want to store some extra information on the channel. This can be achieved via custom channel Data.

Custom channel data is simply additional attributes that channel managers can add to any of your channels. Attributes are text fields with a title label and an optional group name. For example, you could add the attributes Office Hours, Team Leader, Support Mailbox and Contact Number to a channel, which would look like the following:

As you can see the Support Mailbox and Contact Number are contained under the Contact heading as both of these attributes have the group Contact configured on them.

Editing the attribute values is simple:

  1. Find your channel in the Channels List.
  2. Select your channel.
  3. Update the details on the Details tab.
  4. Click Save.

Creating new attributes

You can create additional custom attributes for your channels in the Settings > Custom Attributes page.

You can create the following types of attributes:

  • Single Text: This type allows you to create a custom attribute where users can input a single line of text. It's ideal for capturing brief, concise information like a customer's name or phone number.
  • Multiline Text: Multiline text attributes enable users to enter longer pieces of text, such as comments, feedback, or detailed descriptions. It's great for gathering more extensive information.
  • Date/Time: Date/Time attributes are used to capture specific dates. They are handy for recording events, deadlines, or any other time-sensitive data.
  • Select Box: Select box attributes allow you to create a dropdown menu with predefined options. Users can select one option from the list. This is useful for categorizing or providing choices for specific information.

To create a new attribute, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Heed Admin Portal.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Custom Attributes.
  3. Click Create Attribute.
  4. In the Create Attribute modal, ensure that Channel is selected in the type dropdown box.

Next, enter a label for your attribute and choose the type.
  5. You then have the option to choose a group for the attribute. You can select an existing group or create a new group by entering the required name of the group.

  6. Once you have entered all the values, click Save.
